About Me
…so back in summer of 86, I bought my dream bike (with the help of my parents). A 1986 Raleigh Pursuit. Gold on Black. Beautiful. Steel frame. Comfortable but fast. I used to ride so much just because of how well that bike and I grafted together.
Two years later I sold it to a pawn shop for some pocket change.
Twenty years to the month after buying that Raleigh, I went bike shopping again. The guys at The Bike Shop in Aiea, especially Stu, helped me filter out my wants and needs and get down to a bike that was reasonable and versatile enough for my immediate use – commuting.
That was July of 06.
Since then I have completed several major organized rides, and recently finished the ride that inspired me to start this blog, a solo self-supported bike tour of the island of Oahu. The bike has held up with minor complaints to use outside of its normal role.
Most importantly, I feel twenty years younger, I’ve lost 33 pounds and 8% body fat, I’m overall healthier and happier, and I even shaved my moustache. (I may post pics – I may not 🙂 )
You can find me on the BikeForums as Bloodhound. You can leave comments and/or ask questions here or there. I recommend you check out the BikeForums as you will get loads of help from many experienced riders rather than an opinion from one reborn rider.
I waited 20 years to get back into something I love… no matter where you are at or what you are doing at this point in your life, get back on the bike…
Rock on!
I too convey the message: Rock on.
Kyle, I added your link. Nice site!
Hi Chief,
Great website. Here is a link to those two friends of mine that I was telling you about:

Hurry up and get that Long Haul so I can see how a surly looks before I buy. Just kidding, I will just get one anyway.
Watch out for coconuts,
Greg
Thanks for the link, Greg. Wow. They racked up some serious daily mileage. It’ll be awhile before I could hang on a tour with them. I like the dual Bob trailers. I hear a lot of good things about those.
I’ll be ordering the Surly LHT soon… I don’t know how soon, but soon…
So I randomly stumbled on your page. I’ve got a 1986 Raleigh Pursuit (Gold and Black) in good condition that I’d be willing to part with if you’re interested. If not, no worries.

Hmmmm… maybe! What size frame is it?
good job mate
Great site! Loads of good info.
I will ride with you and Javier during the next Haleiwa century ride.
It would help if you put photos of yourself (maybe on your bike or at the campground) on the web page titled “about me” so that everyone that visits can STONE you when they pass you on your bike.
Just kidding.
i remember when you wrote you where about to sit down cry and throw up. Yeah someways you feel the astonishment of what you’ve completed Physically and mentally and the impact it has.
I love your site! 🙂
Aloha,
I’m moving back to the islands in September and am wondering how feasible it would be to commute from Manoa to campus in Kaneohe…. It’s been 10 years since I’ve been back on Oahu, I was living on the Big I previously… If you have the time, shoot an email? Please?? Pretty Please? 😉 Thanks! =D
