…August mileage… September 4, 2012

So, I’ve finally settled into somewhat of a groove for commuting to and from work on my Surly LHT.

I managed over 135 commuting miles in August. With my varied, but often late shifts, many of those miles were riding home around midnight.

Really glad I ordered those spoke lights from Think Geek. They really attract the attention I need to be seen.

On tonight’s commute, I got my first flat in a long time. Got a little shred of green glass wedged into my rear tire.

Fortunately, I was able to patch it and be on my way. It was a good reminder to occasionally go through the items I carry regularly. Tonight I found my vulcanizing glue had long since dried up.

Thankfully, I carry a bunch of pre-glued patches. Specifically, I carry three packages of a dozen patches each.

Why? Well, if I keep them on the bike, I should always know where they are at.

Besides, over-prepared is still prepared.

Well, my first week biking in more than 6 months was great. I did a couple commutes to work (11.5 miles each way), and a little club ride with our recently formed work ride club, the OTTER (Operations Training Team Easy Riders) Club.

My Sun-Sat mileage totaled 48 miles, and that was only riding on 3 of those days – Sun, Tue, and Thu. So, not too bad.

And I love the bike! Go Surly!

So, I tested my 11 mile route to work today. Not a bad ride at all. Very scenic. Only one section of a county road with no shoulder, but overall a decently safe commute.

Pictures follow:

This is just around the corner from my house. Lots of farmland out here still, though the nearby city is slowly encroaching.

Nice view of the road I ride for the first half of the ride.

The first of two rivers I cross…

Big Lake, Minnesota. Nice town.

And more fields…

Almost 6 miles into the commute…

And the second river I cross… the Mississippi!

Mississippi…

Still the Mississippi…

And last pic of the Mississippi…

You can see the rest of the pics on flickr.

I got a lot of sun today on my test ride, so I hope I’m up for my first day of commuting tomorrow… We’ll see.

Well, it’s been a long time since I’ve posted. It’s also been a long time since I rode. There has been lots of changes in my life.  I’m going to sum them up real quick before I get to the reason I’m posting tonight.

My son turned 1.
I finished my degree.
I went bear hunting in Alaska.
I am retiring from the Navy.
I have taken a job offer in Minnesota.

I’m sure there’s more that I am forgetting, but I’m eager to tell you about my soon to be new bike.

In the preparations of getting ready to move off the island and back to the mainland, I’ve decided to sell my Specialized Sirrus here and get a new bike on the mainland.

Well, I found the one I want. I’m getting a 62cm 2008 Surly Long Haul Trucker in Utility Blue. This is sure to get me out of the non-riding funk I’ve been in, and get me back into commuting and touring.

I’m excited.

I’m getting the bike at a bike shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota called The Hub Bicycle Co-Op. I’ll be picking it up when I move there next month.

As for changes to the bike, I’ll definitely be transferring my broken in Brooks B-17 over to it and my front and rear racks. Beyond that, I’ll be putting some miles on it before I decide.

Wish me luck!

If you haven’t already registered, you are running out of time! Packet pickup will be on April 19th. See www.hbl.org for more information.

The Haleiwa Metric Century is a 100km bike ride starting in, you guessed it, Haleiwa. We’ll ride East up and around the North side of the island, all the way down to around Swanzy Beach State Park, then back. It’ll be a great time. Last year, there were over 900 riders.

You can register here: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?CHECKSSO=0&EVENT_ID=1558136

If you are not up for a 100k yet, then try it out with one of the shorter distances. This is a great family ride with lots of well outfitted rest stops, so you should give it a try.

As far as my mileage update for the year, I’m up to over 340 miles since Jan 1st. Not too bad, but it could definitely be better. With the Metric Century at the end of the month, my mileage will jump quite a bit.

So, I’ve looked at my mileage so far this year, and I’m disappointed. My goal was to have more miles than this racked up by now. I’m currently at 192 miles since Jan 1. That averages to about 3 miles per day. Obviously, I haven’t been riding every day.

Well, I need to get back into riding on the weekend again. I had slacked off on that while getting my pilot license. Now, I have no excuse. Planning on a breakfast ride this Saturday. Should be a good little ride. Not too far, not too high paced, and breakfast in the middle.
