So, I patched my tire up last week in order to get home from work after a rear flat tire.

A couple days later, I put a little more air in the tire and was getting ready to ride to work when it blew up on me. Absolutely and catastrophically blew up. Sounded like a gunshot. Not the kind of gunshot when someone on a nearby farm is out shooting crows, but the kind where you weren’t paying attention at the range and the guy next to you let a shot off with a 44 magnum.

Lesson? Go back to the good patches with the vulcanizing glue. Don’t use the cheap pre-glued patches.

So, I’ve finally settled into somewhat of a groove for commuting to and from work on my Surly LHT.

I managed over 135 commuting miles in August. With my varied, but often late shifts, many of those miles were riding home around midnight.

Really glad I ordered those spoke lights from Think Geek. They really attract the attention I need to be seen.

On tonight’s commute, I got my first flat in a long time. Got a little shred of green glass wedged into my rear tire.

Fortunately, I was able to patch it and be on my way. It was a good reminder to occasionally go through the items I carry regularly. Tonight I found my vulcanizing glue had long since dried up.

Thankfully, I carry a bunch of pre-glued patches. Specifically, I carry three packages of a dozen patches each.

Why? Well, if I keep them on the bike, I should always know where they are at.

Besides, over-prepared is still prepared.
